The one about reality shows
I’ll openly admit I watch E! and we all know E! is full of the most real or reality shows. But here’s the thing,they’re not real or reality shows. In my humble opinion anything that needs to be edited and approved by momagers is not reality.
So continuing the previous post,let’s talk about the magic of film making.
The reality show is only just a show.
It’s not a documentary,or else it would be called that.It’s cameras following around people who seem to be relevant for one reason or the other.
Now here’s the thing.Those people only become relevant if they have something to show,and if they have nothing to show,they create something to show. It’s like me only planning to eat a bag of chips but because there’s a camera around, I might have a “spontaneous” emotional breakdown when I see that one lonely,crumbly last chip looking at me,with a shape so sad that it reminds me of my long lost bunny and the hamster who jumped to his death in ‘99….
And that my friends is showmanship!
The only real thing is most times just the bio of the people on the show.
Have you ever watched “The Hills” ? It was when MTV decided to cut the Music in MTV and replace it with real life dramaaaa! I sometimes land on MTV and seem to distantly remember than when I was young,they actually played videos during the day.Now I just see pregnant teenagers and surprise dates that leave people so unexpectedly stunned.
In any case,the reality show is simply a show where they don’t pay writers to create a plot line and just leave the creativity up to the stars of the show.The “reality” part is just that it apparently follows real people.
There was a whole lot of critique around “The Hills” and how people were dating people who in real reality were dating other people…Anyway,too much complication for my brain.
Masters of setting things up.
I’d like to think that everyone has a very exciting life,but I’m pretty sure nobody’s life is reality show exciting.Events don’t just conveniently happen and life changing moments don’t pop up unexpectedly ( I know we all like the fairytale of the singer being discovered while she was washing toilets and singing Whitney Houston tunes and who got offered a recording deal on the spot) , but those things don’t really happen from one moment to the next.It’s not a before and *poof!* after. Chronology clearly is irrelevant at this point. It’s common to cut and paste lives on those shows.
The ridiculousness of their problems.
If in reality our biggest issues would be lack of motivation,sibling rivalry or double booked agendas,the world would be a very easy place to live in.
We here,in the world of real people do not lack motivation,we usually lack funding or opportunity.We usually get doors slammed in faces and the biggest struggle is sometimes to even get that door to crack open,not to motivate ourselves to go through a wide open door.
Sibling rivalry does not constitute a life changing piece of drama,it’s a collateral issue that sometimes appears and gets solved eventually without grand reunions or interventions. We also do not emotionally break down and get suicidal or lose the will to live if our sisters or brothers act up.
And double booked agendas is sometimes a dream to those who have wind blowing and spiderwebs piling up in their agendas. When people start complaining about having too much work (and brainlessly easy work at that) , you know it’s time to take out the slapping device.
Either way,I still find this fake reality entertaining sometimes,it’s good for those moments where you just need a brainless moment.
